The run down….
Saw four apartments….(that makes 5 in total)
- Just off an an easy route to get to work
- This is NOT in my area that I wanted to ‘live-in’
- there was carpet…and it wasn’t really ‘clean’ carpet
- there was a pool…(outdoor)
- it was on the first floor….(so patio area) (but not very private)
- very OLD applicances–not as old as my Toronto ones, but still pretty old
- Shiny, hardwood floors…sparkling in the sun!
- balcony that over looked the river, where soon the ‘river’ walk will start–which is a huge open ice skating spot!
- parking available
- a 7month sublet
- in an out of the way area, in the hood I want to be in, (out of the way in a good way)
- A condo downtown
- …carpet again
- HUGE balcony, literally you could ‘bowl’ on it.. it’s that big!
- neat kitchen with a ‘breakfast’ bar
- bathroom, well you have to walk through the bedroom for that?! kind of weird
- full outdoor pool, indoor hot tub, sauna and gym
- This was a nice place….hard wood floors, lots of cool storage areas
- clean laundry room
- Sub-let for 10months
- in the area I wanted to be in
- huge living/diningroom area
This is going to be a tough choice! But bring in budget and I have two front-runners…they are BOTH under the ‘same’ agency so I’ll stop off tomorrow and fill out the application. Hopefully I won’t be ‘homeless’ in the ‘peg much longer!
After living in a place for the past 10months that didn’t have cell coverage…I had gotten use to not texting, or carrying a phone all the time, it was pretty freeing and I totally enjoyed the freedom of it….
But moving to a city, I knew that the reality was I had to get a phone..and trying to figure out a new city, made the choice cell over landline fairly easy..heck I wanted to be able to call people for directions!
So, many choices out there.. ever since my little bro and sis-in-law have gotten iPhones.. I was insanely jealous…so today on my 2nd day in Winnipeg….I have walked over to the dark side…. and now am the proud owner of a iPhone…
(now if only I can figure out how to make it work….)
I woke up to a strange sensation this morning… sunlight…bright SUNLIGHT peeking in through the curtains. I’ve decided I’m going to like Winnipeg after all. According to Wikipedia (which is such a ‘reliable’ source of info..but well let’s face it.. this is NO masters’ paper–it’s my blog, I can quote whatever sources I want to quote!)
Winnipeg is ranked as Canada’s second sunniest city year-round,second for clearest skies year-round, and second for sunniest city in Canada in spring and winter.
After living in the Arctic experiencing the ‘almost’ 24 hour darkness, and not ‘seeing the sun’ since last November…I think this is going to be a good city! I like sun, and I have awesome killer shades…and I plan to use them a lot!
I checked out of the hotel, picked up my rental…and stopped off at Denny’s for some ‘brunch’. Then drove myself guided by the hotel map and my printed out google directions to the friends of friends that I would be staying with for the next 2 weeks. (yes, I don’t have to hotel it for very long!). Surprisingly driving a car in a strange city, with tons of traffic was not that stressful. I really enjoyed it!
I had a great afternoon, had tea with my new friends I’d be staying with..and then headed out to check out an apartment. Yes, that’s right… I saw a new apartment–all on New Year’s Day! It was nice, a two bedroom unit, in the area I want…but need to see more apartments til I find my new home.
So many things to think about, so many things to figure out….but one thing at a time!
Today I left one adventure, only to begin a brand- new journey. Some of you might have followed my past adventure of living up in Canada’s Arctic, some of you might not have. It was with mixed feelings that I left. I was sad to leave so many good people, friends, and a wonderful community–yet I was thrilled with starting a new adventure and well doing my “dream job”. Before you ask? What is that job… well I’m not going to tell you… This blog isn’t to talk about my job, but more about my experiences. A place for me to share some photos…and perhaps tell a funny story or two (hopefully they are funny to you)…about my ackward situations that I sometimes find myself in.
This new adventure…it brings me to Winnipeg. A city that I’ve been to twice in my life–once for the interview earlier this month for a 20hour visit…and then there was the first time! Let me share this little story. The fall I started grade 8 I drove across Canada with my grandparents and brothers…we stopped in Winnipeg. I remember doing a tour of the legislative building…seeing the “Golden Boy”…and having a great time, walking around the halls of the building. But the thing I remember the most.. is my Grandpa turning the wrong way out of the parking lot on a one way street… and cars honking at him…and us in the back seat… going… “wrong way, fix it Grandpa” and well then getting told to “be quiet” in a firm way…and silence that lasted until we were safely back on the highway leaving Winnipeg. Let’s just hope I don’t turn the wrong way on any one way streets! (to my grandpa’s defense–it was clearly marked, and well there was no traffic until like all of a sudden!)
I arrived at the airport at 11:33pm… by the time I collected all bags(there were 5 pieces of luggage!) made my way to the airport hotel(after balancing all 5 pieces on one of those really tiny airport luggage carts…oh yes.. I have mad skills–So should have taken a photo of that…but well after travelling for more than 12 hours… it somehow slipped my brain.). I checked in and headed to my room. It was 11:58pm when I walked in.
I think it was very fitting that I arrived on midnight–ready to start a new year, new province, new city, new job, new apartment, new car, new phone, new decade(year and of life)…hmmm so many new things! Let’s just hope that all the “new” won’t overwhelm me.. and stress me out too much… we’ll have to wait and see how this all did unfold. For now I’m going to sign off and well I’ll let you know how this ‘new’ plan unfolds!
