Diggin’ in the Dirt…

Today’s Agenda:

1. remove sod to create some flower beds…(done!)

..first it involved a little shovel action.. to ‘cut’ the grass into strips…
..then the next part involved some rolling action.
…then we had to digging up the grass.

..picking up the sod…(it always helps when you pick up something heavy to make a noise…)

2.  Dig footings for the ‘deck’…(done!)
Didn’t take ‘too many’ pictures… of this process… but here’s one of them filled with the quarter down…. (yep hauled many a wheelbarrow of that stuff!)… I worked with a few different people… and measured and staked out the spots for the footings.
The dirt was REALLY hard in places, partly because of the rain, partly because this ground use to be under the brick path (we removed last week)… but after I was done… I’m not sure what happened..but digging those 6 footings apparently gave me some energy.. (and apparently made me sweaty!?)

3.  Put the Beams in place on the paving stones and add joists… (done!)

…then add the cedar planks.. (oh they smelt sooooo darn good!)

4. Screwing it all together…(in Progress!)
Then someone handed me the drill… and I got went to work screwing the cedar planks in place….
..it’s been awhile since I’ve built anything… but I once I got the hang of it again, I had a lot of fun.

I stayed until the battery died… and well the other wasn’t charged yet!  (I was so tired–I didn’t take anymore photos…but I’ll keep you posted on some of the befores and afters at some point)

Because of all the rain this week.. work will probably continue next weekend as well!! It was the PERFECT way to spend a Saturday…it’s fun to see the project coming together slowly but surely!!

This summer when I was in Ontario I did tons of ‘mini’ photo shoots for friends and family… one of the fun shoots I did was Leanne and David’s engagement shots! Leanne is my second cousin… and I was so excited that I could do this for her and her fiance David!

Today was their wedding day, Congrats Leanne and David!

The ring…

 Standing at ‘The Pointe’…

Congrats again…Leanne and David!!

Hope your day was fabulous… Wishing I was there to celebrate with you.  I am sending you heaps of love, and best wishes from the ‘peg!! Can’t wait to see photos from your day…

luv, Sarah

It’s a rainy world….

…and sometimes you just have to keep on driving!

Ahoy, me mateys!!

I’ve always had a deep love of pirates… and no it started way before Johnny Depp became one… (although that has made the love grown stronger..who can blame me!?!)
Oh and let us not forget Mr. Bloom who also made some of  us girls hoping to meet a pirate some day!
But I think my love of pirates really did start back as a teenager… when at this summer camp and it too had a deep affinity to pirates…(which is an inside joke).  One of the Mayors’ of a 9 & 10 year old Section of the camp made up a  song that was all about how everyone that worked at the camp were pirates.

It was a quite clever song with the the chorus and verses made up of ‘inside’ jokes of things that happened that summer that only staff would know about.  Thinking back about this makes me smile, but part of it is kind of silly…like you might only remember if you were a pirate working at that camp!  Even years later.. I still remember my ‘pirate’ days along the beaches of Lake Clearwater!

Alas there is something deep down inside of me that will always want to be a pirate!

Today is Officially “Talk like a Pirate Day”….  to mark that day… you get to see me in my full pirate gear…I am not one to be messed with..!!

Aye – that’s right! So, Drink up, me hearties!
Arrrrrr. shiver me timders….I’m off to swab me’ decks…and fill up on some grub.. and look for some buried treasure!

Bricks, bricks… and even MORE BRICKS!

This morning I got out of bed and headed over to a Daycare I know… See they are in the midst of ‘re-vamping’ and re-working their outdoor playground… to make it a more ‘natural’ landscape… I volunteered some time to help with the ‘grunt’ work… The first job of the day… was to lift up all the paving bricks from the path… and put them on pallets so later they can be ‘re-used’…

One of the paths……
Picking up the bricks, that the ‘machine’ helped to lift… then we had to ‘clean’ them…and then stack them (so that they were ready to be re-installed next weekend).
One of my co-workers and I preferred the ‘old fashioned shovel approach…. see our ‘skid’ of bricks in the back ground….
Here I am… cheesy smile and all… cleaning bricks…. (and you can see Milo in the background if you look really closely)
A view of some of the structures that were being moved… (some are being re-used, some donated, and some well they just aren’t in good enough condition to re-use…)
Then there was the sod that was ‘rolled’ up… to be put aside and then put back down after the ‘hill’ is flattened a bit!
Of course… I wanted to test out the ‘machines’… (I didn’t get to drive this one….. I just pretended…)
Ahhhhh this little guy was kind of cool… one of my first questions of the day was, “what are the chances I get to drive that guy?”(I was pointing to this digger) He laughed and replied, “ummm Not going to happen!”…
Well I worked hard along side my co-worker.. we had a great system.. (my tetris skills of putting together shapes, and his use of a shovel… kept us going)… and in the end we ended up taking the corner/and a majority of the path along one side of the playground…. (we filled 4 flats of bricks!!)
As I was about to leave… I jumped in this ‘bad-boy’… and then I got to drive it… oh ya…. and it was fun!  Here I am tryin to sort out the “hows” (lots of levers, buttons and stuff….)
But I got it down with a few pointers… and turned that guy in a circle!!!

Now a question for Samuel… do you know what that little thing is called?! (I have no clue and I hope you can help me out!)

All in all it was an AWESOME day… and I’m glad that this daycare is well on the way to having a more ‘natural’ space…. I’ll probably be heading back next weekend.. so I’m sure there will be more pictures and stories to tell…. although I’m not sure I’m going to want to see another brick again in my life… (but I have a sneaky suspicion that next weekend I’ll be helping lay them for the ‘new’ bike path!)

I’m off to go back and enjoy that sunshine… Hope everyone is having a fabulous Saturday!
