WARNING: this is a RANT!!!

>Dear Hamlet of Pangnirtung,

Hi, How are you? I’m doing great, except for this one thing.  I haven’t lived in your goregous Hamlet for almost 13months.  I miss it there I really do…but I really don’t want to have any more water/sewage bills sent to my new house in Winnipeg.  I have tried to be really good abou this… make jokes about it…but I’m tired.  I have called your good people at the Hamlet office on at least 5 occasions in the last 13months.  In April’ 10 you sent me a record of my WHOLE account which showed that I had a ZERO balance..(after a few notices of an outstanding charges for the months of Jan, Feb (when I had left in Dec)…we sorted all that out… and you were very helpful on my 3 phone conversations as I was sorting this problem out.)

But in order to send this record you were kind of tricky then, and asked for my new address, I gave it to you in good faith. But now you like to send me little reminders, or ‘love notes’ about my time in Pang. To help me remember my water deliveries and sewage pumping? I’m not sure…

The first, “love note” happened about 6weeks in May after you had showed me that I had paid my account in full–and I had received this in writing… a notice showing that I owed $50 (the $50 deposit on the account that I didn’t actually get returned–but it counted towards my first month’s water/sewage)…. I called and talked to someone… they seemed nice, and said they would take care of it.  But then in June you decided to give me another ‘love note’.  I called back and you said, no worries it was taken care of…and it probably was sent before the last call where I sorted it out.

So I went about my buisness…when I came back from holidays in the summer I had 2 more notices… So I called mid- September when I had a chance and talked to someone YET AGAIN. Explained what was going on.. and they assured me that it would be taken care of. For awhile, at least… as now it’s 2011 I’ve received 2 more ‘love notes’.

I’m going to tell you what I’m going to do… I’m NOT going to call you anymore–I’m NOT going to respond to your notices…but I’ve PAID my bill… my account was zeroed out.. I’m not sure WHY you think that I STILL OWE you money because I don’t.  I would come explain in person, but well I really don’t have the $1,600+ to fly there from Winnipeg.

Could you please stop sending me these notices? Because I’m not doing anything about it, and you are killing a tree.  Save yourself a stamp!

Sincerely,
Sarah who does NOT live in Pangnirtung anymore.

*it’s been awhile since I’ve had a good rant, I will be returning soon with more photos and fun stories…but life has been busy!

Sickness and Renos…

Sickness…

Yup, that’s the first thing on the list to talk about… I must admit, last week I was sick. You might think–it’s the flu, but it wasn’t. On Jan 7th–the day after my jury duty (where I sat in a court room with 70 other people, and a woman in the row in front of me hacked up a lung all day)… I started to cough… it was just a dry cough… kind of left me unsatisfied when I did cough–because I felt like I should actually cough with a purpose.  Well I continued on the weekend to have this ‘dry’ cough…. Monday and Tuesday nights–I remember waking up in the middle of the night with a fever, bed sheets wet…and looking in the mirror red stripes across my cheeks… (I took some meds and went back to sleep.) It’s on Wednesday that my cough started to add a bit of nasty to it… I ended up leaving a staff meeting coughing.  You see sometimes when I cough, I start to whoop–or sound a bit like I have croup…and then comes the wheezing/gasping for air..because I can’t actually breathe.  (side note: when I was 21 I was actually incubated in a critical care unit for a weekend because I was coughing, and basically lost my airway).  So after work I went to the doc…got some antibiotics..and a stern note that if my cough didnt’ go away, or got any worse–I had to go to the ER immediately. I must admit that freaked me out a lot.  I stopped at a coworkers house and told her what the doc said.. and then asked if I could call her in the night… to go to the ER if I had to go.. she agreed. (Luckily I didn’t have to go…) but I spent literally the rest of the week coughing so much my ribs hurt!  Thankfully with antibiotics, plenty of rest, and fluids… I’m on the mend… Just need my energy levels to build up again!  I’m so thankful for my friends who dropped by with food…and came to chill on the couch with me…
Renos!
So on Wednesday… I found out that I was finally getting my new counter tops in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as new floors!  I’ve been waiting a long time for it! When I moved in the assistant super (who is no longer here).. said I’d be getting a new bathroom floor in the coming months…(but that never happened)…this fall I asked about it.. and told them about the kitchen counter top.  A work order was done.. and presto! a home reno.. that I didn’t have to directly pay for…. I just wanted to share some ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos for you….
Kitchen BEFORE: (it’s hard to tell how ‘nasty’ that counter top was….it had a bit of green in the pattern)…
kitchen before photo
Kitchen AFTER: ( I love the darker colours…bc it makes the room actually warmer.. and well without any paint… it looks good!)…
Kitchen after photo

The ‘icky’ counter top… that was chipped and banged and disgusting…but now it’s Brand NEW!!! 🙂 (sadly not granite…but still pretty snazzy)

Before and After of the counter

Bathroom… BEFORE: (please excuse my random bathroom bottles!) But do take note of the nasty, water stain by the toilet…that was there BEFORE I moved in a year ago… and is not just a ‘shadow’…but random water stain…

Bathroom before
Bathroom: AFTER! I’m sooo excited… doesn’t it look AMAZING!!!! (and those really silly white ’tiles’ are GONE!)… yahoo!!!
Bathroom after

Bathroom: BEFORE on the left and AFTER on the right!  I was really lucky… because the kitchen floor was still OK; but the bathroom needed replacing.. and management in my building likes to do both at the same time… so I got the NEW floor that I needed in the bathroom, and matching floor in my kitchen.  I needed a new counter top in the kitchen–but same story in the bathroom they replaced it with the same stuff!

Before and after Bathroom

I had to almost ‘beg’ for the new kitchen counter top…. after they took out the sink I took these photos!…

Can you believe that they just wanted to cock and add a ‘sealer’ around the faucet?…. it was ROTTED right through!

Rotted out sink

*this photo was taken outside in the hallway of the counter top… it’s hard to see..but man was that counter top rotted AND mouldy!
I’m really excited that I had this work done… the kitchen and bathroom counters and floors have always been a ‘sore’ spot for me… but NOW they are sooo new… When I came home tonight, my first day back, exhausted… I smiled and cheered when I saw the floors had been finished!!!!
Kitchen things in dining room
Now I just have to get the energy to wipe out the bottom cupboards, and put away the dishes that I had to take out! (although they do look kind of cool in my living room LOL)…
On another note… I was looking back at what life was like early 2010… I posted about camping out in my living room, on an air mattress–with no internets or cable… how far I’ve come in a year!!

Goodbye 2010, Welcome 2011…

>I have returned to my home here in Winnipeg… after having a great time over the past 16 days in Ontario, in a few different towns and cities…!  I’m the type of person that packs a HUGE amount into my short visits… this trip was no different!  I did manage to pack in a lot of visiting, laughing, eating…mixing it up with family and friends! Although I didn’t get a chance to see everyone I wanted to see– I’m so happy I did get to see the people I did see!!

I’ve been thinking all of today about what a difference a year makes. December 31, 2009 at 11:35pm I arrived in Winnipeg–not knowing anyone, starting a new job in 4 days(something I had never done before!), having to find an apartment, arrange to get my furniture from Toronto out of storage, buy a car for the first time..probably way more things to do than I can list there… I did manage to settle into life pretty fast!  Slowly finding my feet in this strange city I had decided to make my home…driving around today I realized that I totally own this city now!! (I know where to go and how to get there… wow what a difference a year makes!)

New Year’s Eve 2010 was pretty awesome!! My camera and iPhone stayed at home…(so no photos) but all I can say is that it was an awesome time…and involved 3 different places… and Emily and I have decided that our habit of spending every-other- NYE  together needs to happen…I’m looking forward to 2012!

I’m not one for making “New Years Resolutions” or anything… but I’m so excited for 2011… This year is going to bring a lot of fun and adventure… I have a lot of dreams, and hopes and wishes… and I need to start making them happen.

So what do I want from 2011?

Here’s a list of a few things I’ll be working on this year…

  • to be the best sister, daughter, aunt and cousin that I can be… (even from a distance..) family is the most important thing you have…
  • to take time to create and be crafty… (finish maybe one of the million projects I have on the go!)…
  • to laugh until my belly aches, and I forget what I was laughing about….
  • to listen to friends, as they share their excitement or heart break…
  • to pay attention to the details…
  • to skype my nephews more regularly…
  • to have at least one road trip to somewhere this year!
  • to continue to learn, and be the best professional I can be at my job…
  • to reach my goal by my next birthday… (break the two by 32… then I’ll get my tattoo!)…
  • to be able to run 5km..without stopping…
  • to figure out what I should do, or shouldn’t do with my photography…
  • to continue to make roots, and making wherever I am and have that become my home!
  • to continue to blog…and make it more regular!

I’m excited for what’s going on in my friends lives… there are a lot of exciting things happening their lives in 2011… new babies, engagements, new houses, new jobs etc… I can’t wait to be there, and celebrate in all of these great times!!!!  One of my best friends had a baby on 1-1-11! I can’t wait to meet him in person…

So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it… can’t wait for all the new exciting adventures that 2011 will bring…and I can’t wait to share them all with you!
