Monthly Archives: February 2013

I’ve been busy living life doing lots of fun things like:

…Crafty Projects!

I started making a pair of mittens with the help from some friends.  I was able to sew in the inner lining but now need some more help and guidance for cutting and sewing the leather for the outside! So for it’s been a really fun sewing project.

Making Mittens...

…Baking Pies!

This was an easy one… I just had to make the pastry (my first time)….and then dump a can of cherries on top…and cover it with more pastry.  Or so I thought… I think I need more practice making pastry.  Because it was a wee bit thick, and almost tasted like short bread.  (but was still yummy!?) Practice makes perfect.  Honestly while I was doing this I was trying to remember exactly how my Gramma made her pastry. The other regret was I wished I had paid more attention and helped her out more while she made pastry for pies!

Cherry Pie...

…Going to Hawaiian themed Parties!

Friends hosted a ‘beach-themed’ Hawaiian party a few weeks ago… it was fun to get ‘leied’ in Pang!  It was awesome night with friends great conversations!  And the food was great lots of pineapples, and I even got an umbrella in my fruit punch.  Such a fun thing to do when that week it has been -30C outside!

..Making Valentine’s Day Cookies

I went a little crazy…and made quite a few sugar cookies! I think it was a nice surprise for everyone that works in the GN Building to get a cookie. But I did have fun making these cookies… here are a few of the Instagram photos I took!

Valentine's Day Treats..

…Chinese Lanterns!

On Valentine’s Day in the evening I bundled up and headed down to the beach.  The community was invited to go down and release Chinese Lanterns.  Most were sent in the memory of loved ones…others released their lanterns with a wish or a prayer.  I got the opportunity to release one of the last of the lanterns.  I released my lantern with prayers…thinking about my Gramma.  My Gramma is one of the strongest women I know.

…Walking home in the light!

Ok, so it’s not quite ‘light’ outside when I leave work at 5pm.  But today the sunset at 3:57pm…so that meant it is quite a bit lighter when I walk home from work at the end of the day.  This is a happy thought…I always get excited as the days grow longer.

getting lighter on the walk home from work!

And just because… here’s another shot I took on my way home today.

Memories of the City of Love…

In September 2012,  I had the opportunity to go to France for two weeks. It was such a great trip.  I got to see the Effiel Tower, and have a picnic and oh the food… don’t get me started on the amazing things I ate for those weeks! The second week I spent with my friend,Nathalie,  wandering the streets of Paris, sitting in cafes, taking photos–oh so many photos, and just relaxing.

Eiffel Tower at night..

I took so many photos.  When I first got back I got busy and I edited the ones that were from the first week when I was in Bordeaux.  But I stopped and haven’t looked at them beyond editing a few random shots.  Life is funny… sometimes you can make yourself so busy…that you don’t take the time to do the things you really want to do.  I think one of my plans for 2013 is to finish up those ‘un-finished’ projects, before I start new ones!

Another reason why I didn’t rush the editing was that I wasn’t sure what to share on my blog.  I knew I wanted to share my photos from the trip but wasn’t sure what or how much to share. And until this was decided I just choose not to share anything.  Anyone who knows me in person knows that my whole life isn’t showcased on my blog, it’s just glimpses of my life…a snippet here and a snippet there. Don’t get me wrong it’s something I love to do…but lately I’ve had the question of balance of what to share and what not to share circling around in my brain.  I think every blogger at some point in their blogging they reach a point and have to answer the questions: how much do I share? what is private? what can be public? It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately…there’s that balance. I do love to share my photos and stories with family and friends I’m not going to stop doing that.  But it’s also something that I’m trying to figure out a balance…I’m still coming up with the answer. That being said, I do want to share some of my memories from France.  So over the coming weeks I’ll try to post some of my favourite shots from my weeks in France.

Since today is Valentine’s Day I thought I’d share a few photos I took in Paris while wandering the streets.  I was walking back to my hotel (near the Eiffel Tower) from Notre Dame.  (yes, if you know Paris it is quite a long walk! But I had 3-4hours and it was such a gorgeous day…so I enjoyed my walk!) There were so many fun things to stop and look at.  One of these things was the Pont des Arts.

Pont des Arts

It’s a walking bridge…and is covered with thousands of little tiny locks.

Pont des Arts

There are many different stories I’ve heard about these locks… people use to come in the secret of the night, walk hand-in-hand over the bridge and attach a small pad-lock to the bridge.  Then they would throw the key into the Seine and their love would live on forever.  Well tourists seeing this…started doing this in broad daylight…even *gasp* standing on the bridge taking their photos with their lock.  It’s caused some controversy. Once or twice all the locks have been removed, but very soon they are replaced. (Many other cities in the world also have ‘adopted’ this tradition on their bridges…)

As I look at these engraved locks…I wonder what these couples are doing on this Valentine’s Day. Is their love standing the test of time? Being the hopeless romantic at heart I am…I hope that their love is standing the test of time.

Pont des Arts

Wishing my family and friends a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

Sending you my love from *just below* the Arctic Circle!

Luv, Sarah

Wordless Wednesday XXXIII: Tuesday Night Lights…

It’s been a few months since I shared a Wordless Wednesday. So decided it was time to start this series of posts up again.  However, this wordless wednesday might not be so ‘wordless’! Last night the aurora borealis were out… it was so good to be home in Pang to see them!

Northern Lights...

I stayed really close to my house…as it was late, and really cold!  But the view of the lights was still amazing.

Northern Lights in my Backyard... This is one of the best things to see in the world! I’ll never get tired to of seeing them… (even managed to capture a few selfies…I even liked this photo once I turned it into a B&W.)

Northern Lights in my Backyard... Northern Lights in my Backyard...

These are my first shots for 2013.  I was a wee bit rusty, and these shots are a bit grainy…just means I need to go out more regularly to practice… and so need to get out of the town lights to reduce some of the ‘light-polution’ in the photos!

Northern Lights in my Backyard...

Can’t wait to go out again!

January 2013: #FMSPhotoaDay

For 2013 I wanted to step up to the challenge of taking a photo EVERY SINGLE DAY!  I decided I would use instagram to share them then at the end of the month blog the photos I came up with.  Last year I did a few Photo Challenges following along with Fat MuM Slim’s challenge lists.  So I decided to try to play along each month this year.  So I’m 1/12 done… I did it!

Here’s the January 2013 List:

Day 12: Surprise… I was on the train heading to Ottawa.  My holidays were almost done. The train trip was a last minute decision but so worth it.  (*this photo was taken one day late!)

Blizzard in Iqaluit

It’s been a busy week in Iqaluit.  Great meetings, lots of fun catching up with friends…and now experiencing a blizzard!  This morning my flight home to Pang was cancelled because it was windy in Pang.  Now Iqaluit currently is having a blizzard!  I just checked out the forecast…I’m not sure if my morning flight will happen.  Looks like the blizzard is forecasted to last for most of tomorrow too.

Blizzard weather...

I’m safe and secure in my hotel room. It’s almost like being home in Pang during a wind storm…no the hotel isn’t shaking…BUT I’m on the top floor and the roof is creaking!

Here are some of the views from my window I took this week…

Blizzard in IQ: BEFORE

Here’s the view now… (taken at about 4:30pm)

Blizzard in IQ (NOW)

…should be a fun night just listening to and watching the storm! Not that I’m going anywhere…taxi’s are off the road!
