Whitehorse: Part 2…

Jen and I spent June 30th with friends of hers that also lived in Nunavut at the same time in 2009…!

They took us to the Whitehorse Mud Bog… it was pretty fun to see the trucks going through the mud!  It was a gorgeous day and really just was fun to be outside! Whitehorse Part 2- 1 Whitehorse Part 2- 2

They had a “kid-run” through the pit… a dash for cash… Whitehorse Part 2- 3

Some of the trucks just didn’t make it and had to be pulled out! Whitehorse Part 2- 5

Here we are…getting our red-neck on!
Whitehorse Part 2- 7

After the all that mud we headed up to Miles Cannon… such a pretty spot on the Yukon River! Whitehorse Part 2- 9 Whitehorse Part 2- 10 Whitehorse Part 2- 11

We also stopped at the Millennium Walk Eagle’s Nest… were we saw one of the parents watching over… you can also go to the live web cam to see the young eaglets in the nest! Whitehorse Part 2- 12

Jen left at 6am on Canada Day for the airport… I spent Canada with a friend and his family.  My friend lived in Pang the summer of 2009 for a month… so it was nice to catch up again!  It was a fun chill-out day… and I didn’t take ONE photo all day (a first for me in the past 14days!)

I’m sitting in the Vancouver Airport.. waiting for my next flight to Ottawa!  It’s hard to believe that the trip is done… so many stories, photos and memories were made in the last 14days… I know I will probably have more photos and stories to share at some point…

I also know that there will be more updates in the future… as Kara, Tina, Kennie and Jen get back to life and sort through photos and begin posting some of their stories!

Whitehorse: Part 1…

Saturday (June 29th) was the final day with all three Ravens!  Kara toured us around Whitehorse… we started off at the Woolly Mammoths…

Bearded ladies can fly… and take down a wooly mammoth (in case you were wondering!) Whitehorse 2

Beware in the bushes of Whitehorse.. this is the land were GIANT beavers roamed a long time ago! Whitehorse 4

Jen and I went into the Transportation Museum to explore… Whitehorse 5 Whitehorse 6

The Yukon Brewery… mmmm beer, usually not my drink of choice, but it is something I can drink on occasion.  Jen was determined to make me a beer drinker… by the end of the trip, she might have just done that….Whitehorse 9Whitehorse 10 Whitehorse 12 Whitehorse 13

We split up for part of the afternoon.. I wandered around downtown… checking out a museum and the log church! Whitehorse 14 Whitehorse 17 Whitehorse-18Whitehorse 16

That evening we went back into town for The Frantic Follies… It has been a show that has been going in for about 43 years! One of our blogging friends, Fawn is the lead singer.. so it was nice to see her perform and hear her sing live…she is so talented.  She also has her own CD out… which is pretty awesome too! Whitehorse 21 Whitehorse-20

…we had one last sleep in the camper, then the next morning helped Kara do a grocery shop… and then we let her get on the road back to Faro.  It was hard to believe the trip was over!

But don’t worry… Jen and I still had ONE more day in Whitehorse to explore…

Last Travel Day…

On Friday we had a bit of a sleep-in… re: we got up about 8:30-9am (to me this isn’t really a sleep in, but for others in the group it is a huge sleep in!) We headed into Haines to do some exploring… we stopped off at the visitors centre…then headed to the Sheldon Museum & Cultural Centre. After we walked through the displays, we wandered past the Hammer Museum…which is one of the ONLY hammer museums in the USA.

At the suggestion of the volunteer at the museum we headed out of town in the opposite direction of our campground from the night before to go to the Chilkat State Campground.  We decided to have a picnic inside of the camper because of the bugs! But then went outside to explore and take some photos… Haines to Haines Junction 4It was such a gorgeous day.  I was so happy that the mist was just hovering in spots, but we could see the peaks of the mountains.  Haines to Haines Junction 8

After several attempts of setting a timer and then getting into position we finally got a group photo! (it was a really rocky path to get from camera to people!) Haines to Haines Junction 9

Jen and I decided to do some ‘jumping’ photos…

Jen decided to grab a stick to practice her flying skills… and so did I.

All I can say is Glaciers are pretty awesome!… Haines to Haines Junction 20 Haines to Haines Junction 25

We headed back into Haines to find the Haines Brewery… It was in this old building that was part of the set that was built for the Disney Movie “White Fang” which was filmed in Haines! Haines to Haines Junction 31 Haines to Haines Junction 27

Some of the other buildings around this old movie set…most of them had shops in them! Kind of cool… I love the ATM machine building! Haines to Haines Junction 32

We got back on the road and stopped just outside of Haines for a little breather from the car…Haines to Haines Junction 37

So here’s a map I just found…it totally shows the route that we did the second week of our trip.  Just for people that like maps but don’t necessarily want to google them for themselves! Here you go… We did Whitehorse to Carcross to Skagway (via car) then Skagway to Haines (via ferry) then Haines to Haines Junction to Whitehorse (via car).

There were stellar views from the truck on our trek today…

Just a stop at Haines Hwy Summit….with our capes.

…Jen decided to do a bit more flying on the broom while at the Haines Highway Summit! Haines to Haines Junction 43

After the brief trek through northern BC we headed back into the Yukon!

Saw a Brown Bear eating dandelions beside the highway! (this brought the wildlife count to: moose, fox, rabbits, bear, eagles…)

We arrived in Haines Junction… after a brief stop we got back on the road.  At this point we were all pretty tired, and just wanted to get back to Whitehorse…and out of the truck!  (I can’t remember right now how many Kilometres we have travelled…I’m sure Kara can let us know at some point in the future…but it was a lot!)  The 2nd reason we wanted to get back to Whitehorse was we wanted to make the late showing of a movie, but that’s another story for another time! Haines to Haines Junction 51

…up next… our last day together in Whitehorse!

Haines, Alaska

…after getting off the ferry we booted into Haines to see what we could find.  The fog/mist was low in the sky covering up most of the mountains…but it was still so breath-taking!

Haines 11

We found a restaurant just by chance.  We were driving around and found this awesome store that sold smoked salmon… and beside it was a restaurant called the Fireweed.  We went up to look at the menu outside… and were going to leave but a man delivering beer from the Haines Brewery talked to us.  He basically said we should go in.. and we did. It was the BEST decision EVER!  If you ever get to Haines… you NEED to eat here!

Jen got ID’d for her Birthday… best birthday gift EVER! (the drinking age in Alaska is 21)…

Haines 3

I had a Halibut burger..with a HOMEMADE bun… so yummy! Haines 5

Kara had these awesome things…stuffed with goat cheese, prosciutto, and pesto…. so yummy!

Haines 6

…don’t forget the bacon wrapped date!
Haines 7

Kara, Jen and I shared these 2 desserts… so yummy… mine was a lemon thingy.. that was so tart but sweet… and Kara got the tiramisu!Haines 8

After dinner we had to find a campsite…. we were just going on the fly, and decided to try out the state park outside of town.  On the way we stopped to take some photos…because the lightening was just so perfect! (I think the next set of photos are my favourites I took all trip…sorry for so many photos..I had so many fav photos but didn’t post all of them!)Haines 10Haines 13Haines 15Haines 14

Taken while on the move on our way to the campground, out the window of the truck…

Our site for the night… nice warning! Haines 17

Jen and I went to go self-pay for our site… $10 US (Yahoo for State Campgrounds!) and then we took off down to the lake to take some photos… with the warning signs we were hyper aware and alert for the possible Grizzly sighting! (but none were seen…) Haines 20

…this man was fishing, didn’t catch anything…but so peaceful.  The next day we drove by and it was so choppy and not like this at all.  Jen and I were lucky to catch it this way… at the right time of day!

Haines 22Haines 23

The fog is covering a lot of the mountains..but I love this photo because it shows such perspective of how awesome this area is! Haines 24

Just before we headed back to our camp for the night a random couple came up and I took their photo.  Then they offered to take one with Jen and I… the perfect ending to an awesome but LONG day!  It started off with the Train ride, then a ferry ride and ended up with an awesome dinner! Haines 25

Skagway to Haines

…after the train got back to Skagway we went out for lunch and some Birthday drinks for Jen!

Then we wandered in Skagway and did some shopping… did you know that there are crazy amounts of jewellery stores in Skagway? it was like every other store was one!  Who would have thought?

We got to the Ferry and checked in early.. so had to wait a bit…before we got onto the ferry.  It might have been one of the slowest ferry loadings ever…because of the process of getting the cars/trucks/campers and trailers all into the right spots on the ferry!

We just had a short ride of about an hour over to Haines, Alaska.  It was a fun just to wander and take photos for an hour!  The weather was a bit rainy and cloudy…but this just added to the fun of taking photos. Skagway-16Skagway-18Skagway-21Skagway-24Skagway-26Skagway-27Skagway-29

Arriving at the Haines ferry dock…so much fun! Skagway-32
