Icy Trees…

This past weekend while driving I was greeted by the most amazing sight.  The trees on either side of the road were sparkling in the sunshine.  The crazy weather from earlier this week left the area with snow and freezing rain…which left everything covered in icy goodness! icy trees_0001

I love how the ice clung to the fence which normally would have just been a boring line in the photo below! Even the fields were full of shine and sparkle as I drove past! icy trees_0005

The road signs and street signs also were covered in icicles that at one point had been dripping, but then stopped frozen in time… sometimes life is like that. We are moving along and then suddenly we are frozen in time…until the sun comes out and we are released and ready to flow again.  icy trees_0002 icy trees_0003

Had to stop to take at least one fun selfie in Milo’s window… icy trees_0004

…close to sunset one last snap that makes me smile and be glad I was there to witness it! icy trees_0006

It feels good to be taking photos again, although I feel a wee bit rusty. But I do know I’ve missed my photo walks with my camera.

Last Travel Day…

On Friday we had a bit of a sleep-in… re: we got up about 8:30-9am (to me this isn’t really a sleep in, but for others in the group it is a huge sleep in!) We headed into Haines to do some exploring… we stopped off at the visitors centre…then headed to the Sheldon Museum & Cultural Centre. After we walked through the displays, we wandered past the Hammer Museum…which is one of the ONLY hammer museums in the USA.

At the suggestion of the volunteer at the museum we headed out of town in the opposite direction of our campground from the night before to go to the Chilkat State Campground.  We decided to have a picnic inside of the camper because of the bugs! But then went outside to explore and take some photos… Haines to Haines Junction 4It was such a gorgeous day.  I was so happy that the mist was just hovering in spots, but we could see the peaks of the mountains.  Haines to Haines Junction 8

After several attempts of setting a timer and then getting into position we finally got a group photo! (it was a really rocky path to get from camera to people!) Haines to Haines Junction 9

Jen and I decided to do some ‘jumping’ photos…

Jen decided to grab a stick to practice her flying skills… and so did I.

All I can say is Glaciers are pretty awesome!… Haines to Haines Junction 20 Haines to Haines Junction 25

We headed back into Haines to find the Haines Brewery… It was in this old building that was part of the set that was built for the Disney Movie “White Fang” which was filmed in Haines! Haines to Haines Junction 31 Haines to Haines Junction 27

Some of the other buildings around this old movie set…most of them had shops in them! Kind of cool… I love the ATM machine building! Haines to Haines Junction 32

We got back on the road and stopped just outside of Haines for a little breather from the car…Haines to Haines Junction 37

So here’s a map I just found…it totally shows the route that we did the second week of our trip.  Just for people that like maps but don’t necessarily want to google them for themselves! Here you go… We did Whitehorse to Carcross to Skagway (via car) then Skagway to Haines (via ferry) then Haines to Haines Junction to Whitehorse (via car).

There were stellar views from the truck on our trek today…

Just a stop at Haines Hwy Summit….with our capes.

…Jen decided to do a bit more flying on the broom while at the Haines Highway Summit! Haines to Haines Junction 43

After the brief trek through northern BC we headed back into the Yukon!
Haines to Haines Junction 46

Saw a Brown Bear eating dandelions beside the highway! (this brought the wildlife count to: moose, fox, rabbits, bear, eagles…)

We arrived in Haines Junction… after a brief stop we got back on the road.  At this point we were all pretty tired, and just wanted to get back to Whitehorse…and out of the truck!  (I can’t remember right now how many Kilometres we have travelled…I’m sure Kara can let us know at some point in the future…but it was a lot!)  The 2nd reason we wanted to get back to Whitehorse was we wanted to make the late showing of a movie, but that’s another story for another time! Haines to Haines Junction 51

…up next… our last day together in Whitehorse!

On the Road to Skagway, Alaska!

…after spending the night at Little Salmon Lake just a little ways from Faro we got on the road again!  We had a quick stop in Whitehorse to get some cash and do a bit of shopping…then we were back on the road!

Our first stop was Carcross… it started to rain when we pulled off to take this photo! We didn’t let a little rain stop us as we explored the info centre and general store!

On the Road to Skagway 2

There was a lot of driving…and the scenery was stunning! The mountains were so amazing… add it a bit of midst/fog and it made it even more magical. On the Road to Skagway 4

We did stop a few times to take in some of the ‘pull-outs’ so we could get out and walk around…. it was so gorgeous!

The thing I sort of knew but didn’t really realize was that to get to Alaska… we actually had to leave the Yukon and dip into Northern British Columbia…(go look at a map!) We passed through the boarder stop of Fraser, BC. On the Road to Skagway (1)

The drive over the last bit of the mountains was pretty fogged in… we were basically in the clouds! On the Road to Skagway 10

I was told that the view behind this sign is amazing… gorgeous mountain peaks… but it was a sky of white for us… kind of made the “white pass” name come true! On the Road to Skagway 12

We came down into Skagway, Alaska… On the Road to Skagway 13

We got ourselves situated at our campground… then had a really fun night out on the town.  On the Road to Skagway 15

We met a few new friends… and enjoyed our time at the Red Onion Salon.. the rain didn’t dampen our spirits at all!

On the Road to Skagway (2)

Stay Tuned for more adventures in Alaska!

On the Road: Mayo to Faro…

After the Yummy Breakfast that the Mayo Marathon put on…we got into our vehicles and high-tailed it out of Mayo to Faro!

Kennie and I made a few ‘side-stops’…we totally had fun stopping in on the Yukon River near Minto…it was a pretty nice spot along the river.

We surprised Kara and the others when we passed them…because they figured we were way ahead of them! After a stop at Carmacks for onion rings and milkshakes we headed back on the road to Faro.

There is such amazing views along EVERY road in the Yukon!

We went into the Drury Creek Campground… then headed to Little Salmon Lake!  Had to put my feet in some COLD Yukon water!

After 3 times in and out… I had numbed my feet enough to be able to stand in the water for this photo!

…We then made it to Faro!  Had to stop at the BIG haul truck for a photo… and the Faro sign!

Our last ‘full’ group picture together… Kennie headed to Ross later that night to finish packing and then head across Canada!  Tina headed to Whitehorse to fly back home the following day…. but don’t worry, there are still 3 of us left on this crazy adventure and I’m sure we will have some stories to share!

Pics from the Road…

DAY ONE...from Whitehorse to Dawson City!

Jen arrived after her 4 flights across the country…she got to see Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver before arriving in Whitehorse!

After our first sleep at the campground… we had some visitors for pancakes!

We were excited to pick up Tina from the airport and hit the road!

I got to see a moose and two babies…. so cool!

We stopped at Fox Lake Burn… it happened in 1998!  It was crazy to walk around a burnt out forest…I’m not 100% sure… but my older brother did come to the Yukon to help fight fires…it might have been this one!?

We stopped to pick up a ‘little’ cinnamon bun…which we then enjoyed at Carmacks were we also found WiFi!

It was a lot of driving, but the scenes were pretty amazing…

Yes, us Indigo’s Ravens are super heros! We got capes!

Driving….driving…driving…. Kara’s cool tattoo!

It was an incredible first day… with an awesome stop at Moose Creek Campground… home of many mosquitoes!

….Next Up… Dawson City!
