Exploring Niagara Falls…

Friday night I was at the airport…waiting for an International Arrival.  Keenan was coming to Toronto to run the Toronto Marathon (#3 in Canada and #89 overall!) His flights were delayed but then returned to scheduled time… it was a late pick up… around midnight, but I was happy to see him walk out the doors!

After we found my car… I surprised him and said we weren’t heading to my place in Georgetown…but instead Niagara Falls! We arrived just after 2am… and headed to sleep.  The next morning Keenan got up for his daily run beside the falls… then came back and got ready to take on the day’s adventures.

I had never been on the Hornblower (the Maid of the Mist only now runs on the American side of the falls).  So our first thing we did was grab tickets and head out towards the falls.  SO MUCH FUN! It was a cloudy kind of day… and there was some additional mist from the falls made it a wet trip!
We got to all put on our ‘pinkish-red’ ponchos and enjoy the ride…

My camera may have gotten a bit wet… and after this shot put it away for a bit.   The falls are so spectacular. Such a fun place to visit. I must admit it’s probably my only 3rd or 4th visit.

We did catch two people zip-lining down to the water… what a view!
The flowers were out…and so pretty…

We stopped along the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) for an impromptu pull off… Keenan wanted to see Lake Ontario… and then we passed this boat. Thanks Keenan for doing the research about this boat because I had no clue what it was…or why it was there!

The Grounded Ship was a replica of the Grand Hermie used by Jacques Cartier in 1535-1536 and 1541-1542 to explore Canada. This ship was built in 1967 for Expo 67 [in Montreal] as part of the nautical theme as Expo 67 which was on islands in the St. Lawrence Seaway.  The ship was taken to Quebec City and abandoned in 2001.

After a stop and a nap at my apartment in Georgetown…we got dressed up for dinner at the CN Tower in Toronto!

What a fun way to see the city…and enjoy some pretty awesome food.  We lucked out and the view was pretty clear—the clouds didn’t stop us for seeing things.

After dinner we headed downstairs for a quick walk on the glass floor… then it was time to head home to get to bed! We had to be up early for the marathon on Sunday. Whirl-wind weekend visits have to come to an end…but there was still one more day!  If you want to see Keenan’s blog and story from the day you can check it out here.

Hamilton Waterfalls Hike

This morning I got up early and headed to Hamilton.  I had plans to meet up with the “Take a HIKE” Caledon Ladies Hiking and Meet Up Group.  The plan was to hike a 9km loop on the Bruce Trail, Robert MacLaren Side Trail and the Iroquoia Heights Side Trail and to see a bunch of waterfalls.  However, the waterfalls were just a trickle or all dried up (wrong time of year) but that didn’t stop the fun we had hiking! hamilton-hike_0015

Here’s everyone from our hike today…minus me!  Today the group invited their partners to join the hike…

hamilton-hike_0024

We started at Cliffview Park and went down the stairs…(lucky for us we didn’t have to come back up these stairs…). But we did see lots of people doing circuits up and down the stairs… what a workout!
hamilton-hike_0001

Below is a little make of our adventure.. (my app tracker said we did 8.38kms…but others in our group said we did more like 8.45-9kms).  All in all it was an awesome 2 hours…and didn’t seem that long at all. hamilton-hike_0002

The first surprise of the day was a runner coming towards us and saying “there’s a bear up there”…so what do we do? Walk faster towards what we think is a bear…(I’m thinking it can’t hurt us that much after all it’s not a polar bear.) Someone in the group kept saying “if it’s a bear why are we going closer?”… To our surprise it wasn’t a bear…something even cooler…a deer!! Faster than a blink the two doe ran across the path… and the buck stayed high on the trail.  hamilton-hike_0003There was one spot that was filled with Inuksuks… I can’t believe that it’s November 13th, because the weather was so awesome, sunny and warm perfect for a hike.
hamilton-hike_0004

…even though most of the leaves had fallen…it still was a gorgeous walk! hamilton-hike_0005

We did see this cool photo of all the cool waterfalls… I need to visit next spring when there’s water running.
hamilton-hike_0006

As we were hiking it was a wee bit weird… here we were in nature but all we could hear was the cars from the highway. It was weird to be in such a beautiful nature spot…but having the city so close.
hamilton-hike_0007

…this was my first time hiking on the Bruce Trail-–it was so well marked (see the white marks on the trees)…and there were so many other people out enjoying the day.

I took in what Nature had to offer.”-   Raymond Carver, This Morning

It was fun chatting with new people along the trail–this was much easier in the daylight and our trail was easier to walk two-by-two…and just jump the side for a biker or runner to pass.

Princess Waterfalls still had a bit of water…but just a trickle. hamilton-hike_0010

Thanks for snapping this photo of me Mira!!!

You need to keep your eyes open for roots on the trail… just like in life, they can be hidden under leaves and if you aren’t watching can trip you up!
hamilton-hike_0012

…I really wish I had stopped and gotten someone to take a shot of me along this ‘road’! hamilton-hike_0014

When hiking remember to take the time not only to look down for roots and rocks, but also up… you might see something worth it.

This trail today had a gorgeous view of Hamilton! hamilton-hike_0029

Sometimes you need to take a bike ride with your dog in your backpack!

The kid in me couldn’t pass up a fun photo shoot of throwing leaves…I made everyone stop and throw leaves all over the place! hamilton-hike_0023

I think it was worth getting covered in leaves….and them stuck in our hair! hamilton-hike_0027

“It’s all still there in heart and soul. The walk, the hills, the sky, the solitary pain and pleasure–they will grow larger, sweeter, lovelier in the days and years to come.”
–   Edward Abbey

hamilton-hike_0026 …in the 2nd part of the hike along Scenic Drive…it was fun to also see some of the houses! (and a child care centre….wow! it would have been amazing to work there, with so much nature around!) One of the houses had this cool tree house—around an old tree trunk…perfect for late night dinners and watching the sunset.

At times you could see the traffic as well as hear it! hamilton-hike_0017

It was awesome that others offered to snap shots of the group as we hiked!
hamilton-hike_0016

…it was great way to spend a Sunday morning!  I’m glad I found this group on Facebook and actually went out to join them on a hike…not sure how many more will happen before winter…but looking forward to joining in the next one.

Mira also blogged some of her amazing photos from our hike…on her blog, Lifeology 101…go check it out!

Happy Halloween

This past weekend I had a blast in London, Ontario.  Every year my friend Jen throws a fantastic Halloween party the Saturday before Halloween.  This was the third year I was able to go…and was excited to visit Jen, her husband and girls! halloween-fun_0001

This year I decided to go as a Wind-Up Doll…I must admit I LOVE this costume.

halloween-fun_0003

Jen wore these creepy contacts as part of her costume… halloween-fun_0010

Thanks for hosting a great party Jen…you are a fantastic friend!

…just hanging out on the driveway! Such awesome weather for the party… halloween-fun_0013 halloween-fun_0015

…had to take some time to do some selfies with the costume!

halloween-fun_0002

…had to sort out my camera’s flash and settings! (Apparently I had it all messed up—but eventually it was sorted so Jen took this photo of me…) halloween-fun_0014

And then Julie grabbed my camera to snap us taking a selfie… (iphone photo in top right corner)…thanks Julie! 🙂 halloween-fun_0009

halloween-fun_0007 halloween-fun_0004

…there were so many cute kids at the party!
halloween-fun_0005

There were kid games… like bobbing apples and eating donuts off a string…and there were some adult games too like shots of tequila! halloween-fun_0006

…first time putting on flash lashes, nailed it! Loved my take-a-way chip bag monster…

Tonight I had to teach…because of the way the weeks worked it was a midterm…so I brought a wee bit of halloween magic… ie) candy for my students!

October Walks

This past weekend I went away to a Fall Retreat.  During Saturday afternoon there was some free time…before the scheduled ‘tea party’…I went off with two friends for a walk along the trails on the property. weekend-hike_0010

…the first time I came to Fair Havens I was in high school, and came with my youth group for a winter retreat in the winter! weekend-hike_0002

It was so much fun to walk and talk…and take some time to take photos…stopping along the trail.  weekend-hike_0001

It’s funny how a short walk…with my camera and me taking photos can make me feel so alive.  I really need to start adding this back into my life on a more regular basis. weekend-hike_0003

Always need to find me a RED maple leaf…Canadian at heart over here!

weekend-hike_0007

We interrupted our hike and conversations…for a ‘selfie’ moment!

weekend-hike_0005

“The true charm of pedestrianism does not lie in the walking, or in the scenery, but in the talking. The walking is good to time the movement of the tongue by, and to keep the blood and the brain stirred up and active; the scenery and the woodsy smells are good to bear in upon a man an unconscious and unobtrusive charm and solace to eye and soul and sense; but the supreme pleasure comes from the talk.” ~Mark Twain

weekend-hike_0004

The colours and textures of the forest floor were so gorgeous… weekend-hike_0006

Just a wee bit of fungus on that tree stump….
weekend-hike_0009

As we wandered past the camping spots and trailers that are on the property…we passed one trailer that had so MANY rocks…ALL over the picnic table…and lined up in plastic boxes all over the deck.  They had such an awesome rock collection—and I only snapped a few photos of it! weekend-hike_0008

It felt so good to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air…October is an awesome month because fall has arrived.

Milo is sick…

…for awhile Milo has been having some issues.  Nothing that major, just sometimes he won’t start.  It started mid-summer…I took him to a garage in Lindsay.  They checked out everything and told me he was fine. And most days he was ok… he’d start ok… but then others he’d make noise but not not the final switch to start.  milo is sick 1_0013 Last Monday I had him checked out a garage here in Brampton… they gave him an oil change and again…everything checked out a-OK. Even though all last week he continued not to start…and started to stop making attempt noises—just the lights would come on.  But usually after a few tries he’d turn over.
Milo is sick_0012Fast forward today… I was visiting a friend and it didn’t start.  Luckily I have CAA…so called them and got towed back to Brampton.  Tomorrow I’ll talk to the garage again, and hopefully I’ll have some answers.  (But I’m almost 99% sure it’s a starter problem…. that’s just intermittent and hard to diagnose.)

Until then… glad this is the week my mum is visiting so I can use her car!
