Sunday Afternoon Sledding…

Yesterday was a gorgeous day here in Pang…the sun was shining, blue skies and non-existant wind!  I wanted to head outside to get some fresh air.  The day before I stayed inside all day…partly because my house had run out of heating oil…so it was freak’n cold, and I knew that if I went outside…I’d get cold and then come back inside to a cold house.  That’s not such a great plan.  (Don’t worry..I did end up getting more oil, the furnace lines bled and all that jazz..and had a lovely afternoon of catching up on some tv shows…and starting to watch a new tv series, so it was all good!)

I called my neighbours to see if they wanted to go sledding…Ryan was heading out with his son…so I tagged along. We just walked up the snowmobile ‘highway’ behind our house… to just below the hill from the water reservoir.

Then the sledding began!  Marton is 3…and had a blast.  At the end of each run, he promptly get on his feet and say again! Ryan and I took turns climbing to the top of the hill and sledding down with him.  Ryan and Marton went first… I LOVE this photo of them climbing up to the top of the hill, it’s one of my favourites from the day!

I took Marton down a couple of times before I passed my camera over to Ryan.  He did an awesome job at taking some shots of Marton and I on the hill… thank you! (that’s Mt. Duval in the background…I climbed to the top last June!)

After a few times up and down the hill…we stopped sledding for a few minutes. Marton was started to make some snow ‘cupcakes’.  He is one of the most delightful little boys I know…he LOVES to be outside to play no matter what the weather is.  (Today it was -26C and he was a happy little guy out there playing for a good hour!)

Then for the ‘last’ long sled…Ryan and Marton went to the top of the BIG hill… (to the fence of the water reservoir) to attempt to sled down the WHOLE hill following a snowmobile track!

Here they are on the way to the top… (Marton got a rid on the sled!)

As they passed where I was standing to take photos, there was a bit of ‘snow’ spray that happened!  Marton is a trooper… and wasn’t bothered at all about the snow that sprayed him!  (He giggled and laughed about it…) Sledding in Pang_0005Sledding in Pang_0006Sledding in Pang_0007

It was such a fun delightful way to spend some time outside. Thanks for a fun afternoon Ryan and Marton.  Next time I need to take one of my own sleds (I forgot it at home this trip…) and Maki needs to come too!!!

Two things that are making me happy: being able to wear my sunglasses again and seeing my shadow!

Sundogs in Pang…

sundog over Pang...

Yesterday there was a special treat on a frosty cold morning. The sun hovered just over mountain behind town…and a gorgeous sundog surrounded it was the spectacular view.  What’s a sundog?  Well it’s when the sun is low in the sky and interacts with ice particles in the sky. (more info about this can be found HERE.)

I rushed home to get my camera at lunch and head back outside to get some shots.  Here are some shots I ended up taking in my backyard. (…don’t you love the sparkle on the snow?)

Behind my house is a ‘snowmobile’ highway…it’s a perfect place to walk dogs.  So lots of my friends were doing this very thing at the beinging of my lunch break!  So ended up taking a few shots of them as well.

Dogs on the run!

Of course these dogs were happy to be running free…whether they had long legs or short legs! These dogs loved running in the sunshine.

Dogs in the snow... little dogs like the snow too!

Sun + dogs = sundogs …that’s an ok math equation right?

Sun + dogs = sundogs

Sitting pretty in the -31C (-37C with the windchill)…. did seem to bother this beauty!

Soon it was time to back to the party…and finish their lunch run!

...Lunch time Run with the dogs...

Until there was time to a bit more of a play…

Taking time to play under the sun...

Watching these dogs play in the sunshine almost made me wished I had dog.  But in reality…I’m not sure that would be a good idea.  I’m not a great dog person…but love and appreciate other’s dogs.  But big dogs scare me.  The other reason is that it’s hard to find dog-sitters and I do move around quite a bit! So I suppose when I need a dog fix, I can go find a friend’s dog and go for a walk!

Days like yesterday make me smile…Happy Thursday…. hope you have a fantastic day!

...happy to see the sun!

Wordless Wednesday XXXIII: Tuesday Night Lights…

It’s been a few months since I shared a Wordless Wednesday. So decided it was time to start this series of posts up again.  However, this wordless wednesday might not be so ‘wordless’! Last night the aurora borealis were out… it was so good to be home in Pang to see them!

Northern Lights...

I stayed really close to my house…as it was late, and really cold!  But the view of the lights was still amazing.

Northern Lights in my Backyard... This is one of the best things to see in the world! I’ll never get tired to of seeing them… (even managed to capture a few selfies…I even liked this photo once I turned it into a B&W.)

Northern Lights in my Backyard... Northern Lights in my Backyard...

These are my first shots for 2013.  I was a wee bit rusty, and these shots are a bit grainy…just means I need to go out more regularly to practice… and so need to get out of the town lights to reduce some of the ‘light-polution’ in the photos!

Can’t wait to go out again!

Wordless* Wednesday XXXI: Dancing Northern Lights…

As I left work at 5pm last Friday night I had a wonderful light show on the way home.  It was the perfect way to end a crazy hectic week. It was great to see the lights dance over Mt. Duval and over my head and the rest of Pangnirtung.

As I walked to the community hall for a loonie-toonie, I quickly set up my tripod behind my house…and took these ‘quick’ snaps of the lights.  At this point they had actually started to fade!

…In the last month I’ve been so lucky to be able to see the lights dance so much.  This is one of the things I love about the dark season-the lights come out to dance more!

*well almost wordless, just had to share a few words!

Cold & Dark…

It’s reached that point in the year that it’s cold and dark. (Looking back at my two posts on the northern lights last week…you can see night/dark photography is about all I’ve managed to shoot.  This is because the only daylight happens while I’m working…but on the weekends I’ve managed to get out and take some shots!)

Kamiks & Pangnirtung

It’s really not that cold yet…in comparison how cold it can get up here. (Currently it’s -19C (with no wind chill). Earlier today it was -22C with the windchill.) It’s just my body hasn’t adjusted yet to this level of coldness.  I have really great winter gear that keeps me warm, it just is getting back into the habit of putting it all on…and I really need to cave soon and start wearing long johns again.

On Friday night walking home from work I had this revelation….

The only part of my body that consistently gets cold when I’m walking.  That’s my legs from about mid-thigh to my knee caps, long johns would totally stop that. I just don’t like the feeling of many layers…so that’s my current predicament.  Wear the long johns-hate the feeling of the extra layer along my skin OR don’t wear them and freeze my legs.  Don’t worry I’ll dig out my long johns later tonight.

This past weekend I went for a quick walk just after the sun set to take some photos for a new header I had in mind for awhile.  It was really fun to do this shoot…have to love how a timer and tripod pretty much was able to get me the look that I wanted! There were tons of funny outtakes too.  But all in all I’m so happy with the final shot.

This is my 3rd fall/winter up north.  It’s funny, one would think that I’d be accustomed to the shorter days…and the darkness that seems to come at about 2:30pm right now.  But I don’t think I’ll ever get 100% use to it.  Yes, I understand what is happening…I help my body out by taking my vitamin D and sitting in front of my ‘happy’ light to get some rays.  But no matter how much you know it’s coming…it’s depressing and messes with your mind.  It’s one of those things you can’t really explain, until you have experienced it.  We are at the point that the sun doesn’t really rise above the mountains around town…it won’t come back to Pang until mid-February.  I so prefer the 24hr sunlight in the summer…but you can’t have one season without the other right?

So what does a girl do to cheer herself up?

Invite friends over for TV marathons… some of the shows we are watching are: Grey’s, Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time… and a few others.  There are so many laughs and chocolate…I think that’s a prerequisite for gatherings!

In 7months time I’ll be in the Yukon in the midst of an EPIC road trip.  There’s a group of women bloggers I’ve ‘known’ since 2009 when I started blogging…all have lived in NWT/Nunavut at some point in time. In June 2013 we will meet and go on a crazy road trip.  (We have been tentatively been planning this for about 8months…flights for people that live outside of the Yukon have been booked!) Out of the group I have met 1 of these amazing women in person…and can’t wait to meet the other 4!

Part of the preparation for our road trip Kennie and Kara put together some mixed CDs for tunes.  (Jen also put one together, and I think it’s in the mail coming my way…)

I offered to put together a CD for everyone…but my music tastes might be a bit different and my music choices might not be the same as the rest of the group.  The songs I suggested all fell into the ‘top 40’ hits kind of category…and that’s not a popular choice by everyoen else in our group.  So I will save my playlist for next June!

Tonight I got home, and was feeling blah/icky/and a wee bit ‘witchy’…so I turned on my iTunes and put on my “Yukon” playlist.

After putting dinner in the oven and doing the dishes… I found myself singing and dancing along to the music.  Music does help a person’s mood!

What helps pull you out of a case of the blahs? What is one of your favourite songs that helps?
